Trigger Point

The various muscles of the head and neck and upper back palpated (felt) to identify trigger points. Trigger points are hard or tight bands of muscle fiber sometimes referred to as "knots". They can be present in muscles and tendons. Often they may refer pain to a distant area in the head and neck including the teeth. This can be confusing when a non professional person tries to figure out the source of the pain versus the sight of the pain. There are many trigger points that can generate satellite trigger points. Finding trigger point positions and observing their responses to different types of testing (pressure, electrical stimulation, anesthetic injections, "spray and stretch" etc) are important in arriving at a proper diagnosis for the source or sources of head and neck pain. Identification and elimination of trigger points with various treatments can greatly reduce their occurrence. This is essential for symptom resolution of miofascial and head pains.

The following are some of the various trigger point therapy methods:

Massage

Electrical Stimulation

Anesthetic/Anti-Inflamitory Injections

"Spray-and-Stretch" therapy
